If you’re looking for summer activities that are low-key and high fun, if you want to explore fine and performing arts in a supportive atmosphere that celebrates everyone, look no further! JUST FOR FUN lets students learn something new in a relaxed environment. You can be with us mornings only, afternoons only or all day, for as many sessions as you like. Session 1: June 19-June 23

[THIS SESSION IS CLOSED] EASY RIDERS. (ages 10-12) 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Get ready for some easy distance biking! If you haven’t explored our great bike trails yet, you will in this class. You’ll also learn basics of bike care and the important rules for a safe ride. Have bicycle (and helmet), will travel! Students taking Easy Riders must have a geared bicycle in good working order and be able to ride up to 10 miles with lunch and rest stops. $290.

NEW! PLEIN AIR WATERCOLOR. (ages 7-14) 9 a.m.-noon If you love the outdoors as much as you love art, this is the class for you. We’ll walk to special places in our neighborhood to find perfect subjects to paint. You’ll learn Chinese brush and ink-style painting on rice paper as well as watercolor, and you’ll create five pieces of art worthy of framing! $170.

BATIK. (ages 9-13) 9 a.m.-noon. Join this class to learn the amazing process of using hot wax and cold dyes to produce beautiful designs on fabric. No experience necessary—just bring your imagination and we’ll provide the materials for you to create pillows, bags and other pieces of fiber art. $170.

SHOW CHOIR. (ages 10-13) 9 a.m.-noon. Go to the top of the chart! In this class you’ll learn three pop or theater songs and dance moves to go with them, then perform it all for an audience on the last day of class. In Show Choir, everyone’s a star! $155.

MOLAS AND MARIGOLDS. (ages 9-13) 1-3 p.m. Learn how the women of Panama sew colorful fabric together to make cloth images of rainforest animals you’ll create yourself. Then use the art of Georgia O’Keefe as inspiration to dye and decorate your own flower wall hanging. $135.

MAKE IT WITH DUCT TAPE. (ages 8-13) 1-3 p.m. Wallets, headbands, bracelets, pencil toppers, pins, change holders—those are just some of the things you’ll create using duct tape in a rainbow of colors and patterns. If you have an idea, we’ll help you make it real. It’s easier than you think and more fun than you can imagine! $140.

ACTOR ANIMALS. (ages 7-11) 1-3 p.m. Ever wonder what it would be like to be your favorite animal? In this theater camp we’ll explore the lives of creatures through movement, storytelling, mask making and more. Invite your friends and family for a performance on the last day! $130.

NEW! COTTON KITTY, DENIM DOG. (ages 7-12) 1-3 p.m. Create your own stuffed animal like a lion, lynx, husky or hound! We’ll look at cats and dogs in famous paintings and design a pillow with an animal face. Then we’ll cut and sew and embellish our stuffed animals until they’re purrfect. $135.

COOL COOKING. (ages 8-13) 1-3 p.m. Can you cook without heat? You bet! Learn to make cold sandwich spreads, desserts, drinks and more (and taste each creation). You’ll go home with a recipe booklet to continue the fun in your own kitchen. $135.

Session 2: June 26-June 30

SUMMER BIKE CLUB. (ages 10-14) 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Calling all bikers! Here you’ll learn basics of bike safety and maintenance, then practice your skills biking with friends along our beautiful city trails. Have bicycle (and helmet), will travel! Students taking Bike Club must have a geared bicycle in good working order and be able to ride up to 20 miles with lunch and rest stops. $290.

NEW! NATURE, ART AND THE CITY (ages 7-10) 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The Twin Cities have wonderful secret—and not so secret—natural areas tucked in our urban landscape. You’ll hop on our bus every morning to visit one of them, have lunch there then make all kinds of art inspired by what you saw. $295.

NEW! SHOWTIME! (ages 9-13) 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Do you love to sing? Do you love to dance? Are you a rising star looking for more chances to improve your skills? Showtime is the class for you. We will study and work on Broadway scenes and songs, learn basics of voice, technique, dance and acting and end our week by performing a series of songs and dances for your families and friends. $280.

WEAVING. (ages 9-13) 9 a.m.-noon. Come and learn one of the world’s oldest and most flexible arts—weaving. You’ll choose the colors you like to create a mini-tapestry and a wall hanging made with things you’d never imagine can be woven! $160.

BAKER’S DOZEN. (ages 9-13) 9 a.m.-noon. Join us to learn how to make cookie jar. Chocolate chip, sugar cookies, peanut butter blossoms, shortbread—if you can eat it, you can bake it. You'll go home with a recipe packet and samples to share. $165.

NEW! COLLAGE! (ages 9-13) 1-3 p.m. Jump start your imagination with two and three-dimensional collage! We’ll explore all the options including photo transfers, mind maps, paper puppets and more. You’ll start with a photocopy of your own baby picture and add found images, vintage text and any embellishments you can think of! $135.

THE ART OF YARN. (ages 9-13) 1-3 p.m. Not a knitter? No worries! Yarn can be used to paint, and you’ll discover just how to do that to create celestial and animal images. You’ll also be choosing yarn sculpt into vases and other unusual containers. $135.

COMPUTER GAMES TO GO. (ages 8-13) 1-3 p.m. So you don’t get to buy as many computer games as much as you’d like? Then how about creating one of your own! In this class you’ll use free software to design your own computer game which you can share with friends from all over the world. $105.

Session 3: July 3-7--no class July 4!

FAIRY HOUSES AND GNOME HOMES (ages 9-13) 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Spend the week making your own miniature tree dwelling complete with furniture, people and outdoor garden. You’ll use found materials, things from the forest and some items that will take you by surprise to create everything you can imagine for your own miniature world. $235.

JEWELRY. (ages 9-13) 9 a.m.-noon.  Start your own fashion trend with earrings, necklaces, bracelets and pins you make from beads, felt, wire and—well just wait and see! You’ll use professional jewelry materials and found objects to make one-of-a-kind pieces. $140.

TRANSFORMED BOOKS. (ages 8-13) 9 a.m.-noon. Books for reading? Not in this class! You’ll get a hardbound book which you will learn to change into a work of art (or even a secret hiding place) by folding, cutting gluing and adding other materials. $135.

PLAY IT IN THE PARK. (ages 7-11) 9 a.m.-noon. On your mark, get set, GO! Join us for a morning of great playground games, a snack and plenty of outdoor fun. Ships Across the Ocean, Hide and Seek, Frisbee and much, much more. You won’t care if you win or lose, you’ll be having too much fun! For boys and girls, rain or shine! $125.

METAL MAGIC. (ages 9-13) 1-3 p.m. Pop cans, hardware, wire can become what? Amazing art! In this class you’ll use common metal things you see every day to make a standing sculpture, then learn how to wrap wire to create original objects to swing from a mobile. $125.

NEW! YARN BOMB! (ages 8-12) 1-3 p.m. It’s graffiti knitting! If your hands love the feel of yarn, this is the class for you. We’ll start with finger knitting and pompoms and make some fun art to decorate the school. Then you’ll learn to use a Knifty Knitter to make hats and scarves. (It’s easier than tying your shoe!) Whether you’re a fan of sparkles or fluffies, we’ll have the perfect yarn for your fashion creation. $125.

LOTSA LEGOS. (ages 7-10) 1-3 p.m. How many Legos are there in the world? We can’t answer that, but a whole lot of them will be available for you to use in this class to build projects like you’ve never seen before. The only limit is your imagination! $110.

Session 4: July 10-July 14

MOVE IT! (ages 9-13) 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tired of making art that just sits there? Learn the secrets of how to make things move, and make some kinetic art of your own. You’ll experiment with circuits, engines, lights, switches and simple machines to make moving objects of all kinds—doodlebots, bristlebots, jigglebots anyone? $280.

NATURE THEATER. (ages 7-11) 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Yes, all the world is a stage! In this class we’ll explore the world around us to create an original play with sets and costumes you design yourself. Theater games and outdoor fun will combine to help you bring to life a brand new play that you’ll perform for your family and friends on the last day of class. $280.

MOVIE MASTERS. (ages 10-14)  9 a.m.-3 p.m. You have a story to tell. We have the video camera to help you do it. In this class you’ll work in groups to create short films or even a music video, and practice editing. We provide the equipment, you bring your genius. Screening on the last day of class! $280.

PAINTERS OF PROVENCE. (ages 7-14) 9 a.m.-noon. Spend a week with the modern masters and be inspired to make a paper mosaic like Chagall, a cutout painting like Matisse, and a cubist still life like Cezanne. You’ll also paint in the style of Van Gogh, Monet and Picasso, and produce a monochromatic canvas like Picasso. You’ll go home with unique masterpieces! $170.

NEW! YOUNG ARCHITECTS. (ages 8-12) 1-3 p.m. Are you a builder? Then come to this class where you will see some of the most spectacular architecture from around the world to inspire your own creations. You’ll learn some amazing ways to join materials together and use your new skills to build structures from a wide variety of found objects and other materials. $135.

STUFFIES . . . AND STUFF. (ages 8-13) 1-3 p.m. What’s better than a unique stuffed animal you produce yourself? This is the place to make it happen. You’ll design and sew a stuffed toy of your very own--with clothing! You’ll also make a fleece hat and a vest for yourself! $135.

FUN WITH FAERIES. (ages 7-13) 1-3 p.m. Explore who faeries are and what makes them tick. Learn to entice them with beautiful books you’ll make (glitter is our friend!), potions, amulets and hideaways that will offer them much-needed places to rest their wings. We’ll take a secret trip to the forest to leave them some treasures before the week is over. $130.

NEW! POETRY SLAM.  (ages 11-14) 1-3 p.m. Are you a poet and you know it? Then come to this class to write both by yourself and with friends. We’ll workshop our poems by reading and writing together and celebrate with a performance on the last day of the class. You’ll take a book of everyone’s work home with you, too! $105.

Session 5: July 17-July 21

SMASH BOOKS. (ages 8-13) 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Someplace between a scrapbook and a journal you’ll find a smash book—a creative way to keep your memories, record your thoughts and express your originality. In this class you’ll start with a blank sketchbook and embellish and decorate it to create a lasting and unique creative statement. $290.

MOVIE MAKERS. (ages 8-10)  9 a.m.-3 p.m. You have a story to tell. We have the video camera to help you record it. Sign up for this workshop and you’ll get the information you need to create your own video, then learn how to edit your film. We provide all of the equipment—just bring your energy and great ideas! $280.

NEW! BOOKMAKING. (ages 8-13) 9 a.m.-noon. When you come to this class you will go home every day with a little book on a special theme in a different style that you’ve chosen yourself. On the last day of class, we’ll have a book fair to show everyone our amazing work! $150.

WEE GARDEN. (ages 7-13) 9 a.m.-noon. Perfect for budding landscape designers! Create your own miniature portable garden complete with tiny garden furniture, stone paths and real plants. You’ll take home a small masterpiece that will grow for a long time. $170.

NEW! WHAT’S MY LINE? (ages 10-14) 1-3 p.m. If you are an innovator who loves to draw and experiment with unusual materials, this is the class for you! We’ll look at the works of artists like Any Goldsworthy to see just how much you can say with drawings of all kinds. Join us as we paint, pour, cut, wrap, collect and explode lines! We’ll make line sculptures with wire, rope, pebbles and plaster, and look at how what you use to make a line communicates something special. $135.

NEW! READER’S THEATER. (ages 8-14) 1-3 p.m. Performers in this class will bring a play to life using their voices, expression and minimal props and movement. Reader’s Theater focuses on literacy, confidence and helps create a strong purpose for reading. Students will work in small groups and large groups to bring to life a performance for friends and families on the last day of class! $130.

REALLY ROBOTS. (ages 7-10) 1-3 p.m. The future is here and you’re helping to build it! That’s right. You’re going to make your own robot to take home. You’ll start with a paper ‘bot (that really goes) and graduate to gears and circuit boards that you’ll put together to make a robot that will move when you clap your hands and go into reverse when it bumps a wall. $140.

Session 6: July 24-July 28

SUMMER FILM SCHOOL. (ages 11-14) 9 a.m.-3 p.m. If you are interested in a film career—or how movies are made—this is the real thing! Students in this class will have a job they’d find on an actual film set—writer, director, producer, editor, Foley sound engineer, just to name a few—and work as a creative team with cameras, boom microphones, a light kit and other professional equipment to produce a movie they screen for an audience on the last day of class. $290.

NEW! FELTING 1. (ages 10-13) 9 a.m.-noon. Want to turn wool into amazing things? This is your class! You’ll learn both wet felting and dry felting (also known as needle felting) and use your new skills to make and decorate three-dimensional objects like balls, vases, landscapes and even a wee teddy bear or your favorite pet. $170.

ROCKET SCIENCE. (ages 7-11) 9 a.m.-noon.  Not a rocket scientist? No problem! We'll teach you what makes rockets run. You’ll start out small with a stomp rocket, move to a water rocket and end by building your own model rocket which you’ll launch in the park on the last day. Every rocket you make is yours to keep! $180.

NEW! FELTING 2. (ages 10-14) 1-3 p.m. More felting, more fun! If you loved the things you learned in our morning class, sign up for this one too and develop more sophisticated skills for more intricate projects. Open also to anybody who has some experience with felting, and wants to learn more! $135.

NEW! IN LIVING COLOR. (ages 9-12) 1-3 p.m. This class is for artists who want to paint! You’ll learn about some exciting artists you’ve never heard of (including one who had her first show at age nine!), and also experiment with color theory and color mixing. You’ll use shades and tints, values and intensities, and warm and cool hues to create beautiful paintings of your very own on paper, canvas and fabric. $135.

NEW! TRUE LIFE STORIES. (ages 7-12) 1-3 p.m. It’s all about you. That’s right—come and tell us your story! In this class you’ll practice writing your memoir—and then imagine yourself as a superhero, a magical creature or an alien, and tell that story, too. Which one is true? Tell us! $130.

Session 7: July 31-August 4

MOCK TRIAL. (ages 11-14) 9 a.m.-3 p.m. You don’t have to want to be a lawyer to have a great time in this exciting workshop led by an experienced mock trial veteran. You do have to want to have fun researching a case, preparing a defense and learning how to present a great argument in front of a judge.  When you’re ready to go to trial, you’ll do that in a real courtroom for the experience of your life! $290.

IN THE GOOD OLDE SUMMERTIME. (ages 6-11) 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Summer is a time for running through the sprinkler, weaving potholders, learning a great new game of tag and making crafts that involve lots of glue. Sign up to do that and a lot more in this mellow, old-fashioned summer camp. We pace the day according to students’ interests and include plenty of free choice/play time. $290.
