Overview of Scope and Sequence
Kindergarten: La familia (The family)
Students:
- learn vocabulary about themselves and immediate family members.
- practice the vocabulary, draw pictures and talk about their immediate family.
Grades 1 and 2: La familia (The family)
Students:
- review the vocabulary learned the year before and learn more words about family members
- draw and label pictures about their family members.
- complete or write simple sentences with the correct family member words.
- talk about their family members using Spanish.
Grades 3 and 4
Students:
- review vocabulary learned the year before.
- draw and label pictures about their family members.
- write simple sentences including adjectives to describe their family members.
- talk about their family members using Spanish.
- ask and answer in a simple way about their family members.
Grades 5 and 6
Students engage in-depth study of:
- learn the use of verbs in infinitive with ending -ar, -er and -ir.
- focus in learning the verbs with AR ending, and how to conjugate them to form simple sentences and questions in present tense.
- how to ask and answer simple questions using the verbs and the vocabulary they have learned through the school years, in a written and in a spoken way.
7th and 8th grade
Students engage in-depth study of:
- learn the use of verbs in infinitive with ending AR, ER and Ir.
- reviewing the use of the verbs with AR ending.
- focus in learning the verbs with ER and ir ending, and how to conjugate them to form sentences and questions in present tense.
- how to ask and answer questions using the verbs and the vocabulary they have learned through the school years, in a written and in a spoken way.
Benchmarks
Because of the significant development of Spanish speaking people in our country, in our state and in our community, the support that Friends School of Minnesota gives to the multicultural aspects of the society, and the intellectual and cultural enrichment students obtain from learning a foreign language, it is important for our students to begin the process of been emerged in a second language, in our case being this Spanish.
By the completion of 4th grade students should be able to use the Spanish language to:
- tell numbers 0-1,000.
- ask the name of a person or say their name if some one ask them about it.
- name and identify colors.
- greet another person.
- name the days of the week, the months of the year, the seasons.
- name and express feelings for example: estoy feliz, cansado(a), enojado(a), etc.
- tell time
- ask and answer simple questions like, ¿Puedo ir al baño?, ¿Puedo tomar agua?, ¿Necesito ayuda?, etc
- say sentences using Me gusta/No me gusta(I like/ I don’t like.)
- know and use adjectives.
- speak about family, classroom objects, house, farm animals, zoo animals, community, professions, holidays, food, clothes.
- in English demonstrate knowledge of some cultural facts about Spanish speaking countries.
- read simple texts in Spanish.
By the completion of 8th grade students should be able to use the Spanish language to:
- tell numbers 0-10,000
- tell time
- describe themselves in a written and spoken way.
- describe people and objects
- write and say full sentences and questions in present tense.
- in English, demonstrate knowledge about the Spanish Speaking countries and their location in the map.
- know regular verbs and appropriate endings in Present and Past tense.
- read simple/intermediate texts in Spanish.
