Artists Collaborate with Students
Two
art installations were placed in the school in the fall of
2002. One is a set of two clay pieces on either side of the
front stairway landing window. This piece was masterminded
by parent/artist Denise Tennen, who worked with students in
grades K-4 throughout the 2000-2001 school year towards this
end. Each student contributed a piece to the larger work,
though the piece appears to be created by a single artist.
For the complete effect, one must see the work in person,
but here is its likeness.
The
second piece is the James Young Memorial Quilt, another artist-student
collaboration. This piece hangs in the northwest basement
stairwell. The quilt was designed by parent/artist Mina Leierwood
with patches made by many of the 2000-2001 Friends School
students. James Young was the Friends School custodian who
touched the hearts of many in our community. He died in 2000.
