Music Curriculum

We believe that being a full human being includes the understanding and enjoyment of music. FSM chooses to teach music that celebrates the value and spirit of our school’s distinctive Quaker mission. Public performance is viewed as a community service that supports and strengthens relationships with the school community and the broader community, as well as developing a student’s self-confidence and motivating further musical study.

Educational methods include: sequential instruction in singing, percussion, Irish tin whistle, and music notation. Orff instrumentation and Kodály developmental theory and practices are incorporated into lessons. Tin whistle and xylophone practice develops instrumental dexterity and pitch. Appreciation of the diversity of world music is encouraged through listening, learning and performing.
