Classes and Academics

Watch slideshow of our philosophy about learning.

Student doing science lab Friends School provides mixed-age classrooms after students leave the self-contained kindergarten room. Classes are balanced by gender, maturity, interest, and academic level. The school strives to maintain a diversity of students in every classroom.

Follow the links to individual classes, or check out the News section of the web site to see what they have been up to during the past few weeks.

In general, a Friends School of Minnesota education is characterized by...

Hands-on Learning

Children learn deeply when all of their sense are involved in active exploration of a stimulating environment. A variety of learning styles are respected as children engage in experimenting, drawing, writing, modeling, dramatizing, discussing, reading, building, and inventing.

The Inquiry Process

Children's thoughtful questioning guides the in-depth study of themes and topics. Students gather information from a variety of sources (interviews, books, films, field trips, experiments, media) to seek answers to their questions. Then they synthesize what they discover into new learning and share it through conversations, projects, and presentations.

A Weekly All-School Silent Meeting

In the Quaker tradition, our weekly Meeting provides students and staff the opportunity for silence, reflection, and sharing. Brief periods of silence during the daily classroom routine allow students to focus and reflect in the midst or at the end of a busy day.

Classroom Community

Classroom rules, routines and celebrations are developed by the children and teacher together. These important elements help the class grow into a safe, welcoming, respectful, joyful community.

Group Gatherings

As a regular part of the classroom routine, time is set aside to calmly, consciously focus on problems that arise within the group and suggested solutions. This practice supports an atmosphere of peace and community.
