DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

Position: The Development Director will design, implement and oversee creative and effective fundraising and marketing programs to support FSM's educational mission, outreach programs and capital needs. Responsibilities include: management of Annual Fund, serving as editor of Friends Circle (semi-annual newsletter), grant writing and reporting, serving as staff member on the Capital Campaign committee, developing and maintaining relationships with FSM's key constituents including parents, grandparents, Quakers, staff, alumni and alumni parents. The Development Director reports to the Head of School and works in partnership with the Development Committee.

Requirements: The successful applicant must be supportive of FSM's mission and values, possess strong enthusiasm for Friends School of Minnesota, and have excellent interpersonal skills and experience in fundraising. The ideal candidate will have strong organization and communication skills, comfort with public speaking, knowledge and experience in development, fundraising and marketing and success in grant writing. The Development Director must be able to work with diverse groups of donors and able to manage volunteers.

Salary Range: This is a twelve-month position offered on a half-time basis. Salary to $30,437 depending on experience, plus pro-rated benefits.

Annual Fund: Manage and oversee all aspects of the Annual Fund including:

  • Select Annual Fund chairs
  • Oversee letter writing component of Annual Fund by parents, grandparents, Quakers, staff, alumni, alumni parents, friends of the school and business community
  • Oversee printing, mailing of solicitation materials
  • Oversee thank you process, including acknowledgment letters, tax receipts and phone calls
  • Oversee front office and business office Annual Fund databases

Major Gifts: Help develop and coordinate all aspects of any major gifts campaign

  • Develop a comprehensive action plan to solicit major gifts from major donors and potential donors
  • Maintain and strengthen current major donor base

Annual Report: Oversee production, printing, mailing and distribution of Annual Report:

  • Work with graphic designer, providing photographs and other graphic images
  • Collaborate with business office to gather financials
  • Organize articles from head of school and clerk of school committee

Friends Circle: Oversee all aspects of production of semiannual newsletter:

  • Serve as editor for semi-annual publication
  • Select yearly themes for 2 issues
  • Select people to write articles
  • Manage timeline and deadlines
  • Collect photographs of students, artwork and writing pieces
  • Organize editing team
  • Oversee layout and printing

Development Committee: serve as staff support for the Development Committee:

  • Attend development committee meetings
  • Meet and plan with Development Clerk on regular basis
  • Manage and update development plan

Capital Campaign:

  • Serve as staff person and liaison between donors and school in relation to the Capital Campaign
  • Generate thank you letters and tax receipts for all gifts

Administrative:

  • Keep development committee and Head of School informed of development activities on a regular basis
  • Oversee processing of all gifts for the primary purpose of providing receipts and maintaining records of giving
  • Collaborate with administrative team on development and marketing issues and strategies
  • Write monthly articles for newsletter

Grant Writing:

  • Research potential funding sources
  • Write grants for general operating funds as well as for special projects
  • Maintain ongoing relationships with key funders, including Terhuly, Andersen Foundation, and Peace Maker Foundation
  • Gather supporting materials and appendices for all grant applications

Donor Relations/Developing Community:

  • Alumni relations: collaborate with staff to develop a wide variety of ways to communicate with alumni; plan and organize alumni events
  • Quaker relations: attend meetings, connect with Quaker leaders
  • Grandparent Relations: develop meaningful ways for grandparents to connect e.g. grandparents' day luncheon
  • Organizing major donor events e.g. major donor tea, Thanksgiving cards

Public Relations:

  • Work with staff to redesign and maintain FSM website as a marketing and community tool
  • Generate and create marketing materials and press releases
  • Establish relationships with community media
  • Oversee and place FSM advertisements in coordination with other program directors
