Rebecca Slaby Middle School Humanities Teacher
Rebecca has taught at FSM since 2007. She has a B.A. in anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an M.Ed. from DePaul University.
Rebecca has taught for five years, with experience in the Hopkins School District, the Minneapolis charter school Sojourner Truth Academy, and the Glenview, Illinois public schools.
Rebecca believes that education is the first step towards creating social justice and positive change in the world. Teaching students to ask meaningful questions and think critically prepares them to be self-sufficient, engaged members of society who can contribute positively to the world. She loves the way Quaker values of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, and justice are interwoven into the FSM curriculum and that Friends students learn to see how what they learn in school is connected to the real world.
Outside of teaching, Rebecca’s favorite thing is to spend time with her daughter, husband, and two dogs. She loves their evening walks, reading together, and singing silly songs.
“I love working at FSM because the community created by students, families, and staff is so open, welcoming, and supportive. The community truly lives the Quaker values and I feel that I am part of something bigger. I also love how excited my students are about learning and that they still remain curious and enthusiastic in middle school. I feel that I am really making a difference at this school.”
