Alex has taught at FSM since 2007. He has a B.A. in history and an M.A. in teaching from Hamline University.

Previously, Alex worked at River Heights Charter School advising high school students on cross-disciplinary, student-generated projects. He currently also teaches as adjunct faculty at the Hamline University Graduate School of Education.

Alex is an FSM parent of two wonderful, energetic boys. When he is not engaged in some family activity, he works on his novel-in-progress, rides his bike, starts a new home project that he has no ability to complete, or travels the world.

Alex believes learning is an interactive, ongoing exchange of ideas and hands-on exploration. To achieve deep understanding, students must be challenged with high expectations and encouraged to go beyond mastery of basic facts and skills. For learning to be lasting and meaningful, students should be encouraged to apply their understanding of math concepts to authentic, real-world situations. Alex wants students to come away from his classroom believing that math is not only practical and useful but also fun.

“All students crave learning. I cherish FSM as a place where we can feed that hunger in numerous ways while keeping the whole child at the center of every decision.”
